Ball Cup Regatta (South) 2010 Information

Entries will open on 9am on Monday 8th March 2010.

Entries will close at 1pm on Wednesday 28th April 2010.

The Draw will be published by 6pm Friday 30th April 2010. The draw will be drawn randomly by computer.

Ball Cup Ethics

The main ethic of the Ball Cup Regatta is to allow schools and clubs which cannot attain semi-final, final or similar placings at national events to compete against each other on a multilane course. In these criteria 'clubs' refers to both school boat clubs and mainstream rowing clubs, unless a distinction needs to be made.

The overriding aim of the Ball Cup is to give small and emerging clubs and their crews a chance to experience true competition and the chance to win.

The Ball Cup is a ‘closed event’. ( This means that although the event follows the British Rowing Guide for Safe Rowing, Rowsafe, and the British Rowing Rules of Racing, the entry criteria are different. Also, the 50% substitution rule will not be applied. A crew can be substituted up to 100%. Scullers can also be substituted. )

The original “40 seat” condition is historic. With the successful growth of schools rowing in clubs, the 40 seat limit has to be applied in a slightly different way. ( See below ).

However, the entry ethic is quite clear: Large clubs should not enter, and clubs that compete and do well at National Events would not be expected to enter their higher ability competitors.

Entry Criteria

An example of the level of competitor not expected at the Ball Cup is:

  • A sculler or crew in the top half of the results at the National Junior Scullers Heads, in this year or previous years.
  • A sculler or crew who has reached or is expected to reach the semi-finals of an event at the National Schools Regatta or National Championships.
  • A sculler or crew who has reached or is expected to reach the finals of other major multi-lane events.
  • The club itself normally features at semi-final or better level of national events.
  • The competitor would be expected to excel at National events later in the year.
  • The competitor would also be expected not to be higher than “JB” status.

The event is not for young first year scullers of clubs who go to the national events. For example, it is not for the new J14 scullers of a school which generally medals at J18 national events.

Summarising, The Ball Cup Regatta is for those competitors for whom a competitive National Schools Regatta or National Championships entry is too high a goal.

Large rowing clubs which have school “sections” may enter only as the individual schools, but only if the schools row and train as a school and not just separate out for competition.

There is a limit of 40-seats from a club. This is expected to be close to the total junior membership (J13 and above) of the club. However if a larger club trains as individual schools and the schools are not generally combined into club crews, then the limit applies to the schools rather than the club. Also, they should not be the best 40 competitors in the club.

The Committee may look, on receipt of entries, at the ARA membership figures of clubs and schools.

Entry System

British Rowing Online Entry will be used for entries this year. This means that the entries will need to be under club name. However the name of the school which is being raced within a club has also to be shown. Schools which are not affiliated to British Rowing will need to enter under the club where their pupils row.

All competitors, of whatever age, must be registered British Rowing members. The insurance cover offered within such membership is paramount. Registration / racing licences must be carried at the event.

Event Structure

The event structure is designed to encourage the scullers to double or triple up with some boat doubling catered for. The racing order of the finals will be published when the entries open.

The sum of all racing seats ( including coxes ) in The Ball Cup for any school / club must not exceed 40.

Online entries do not refer to 'Boys' and 'Girls', but 'Open' and 'Women', but events are, within that technical definition, for Boys and Girls J13 to J18 ( School Years 8-13 ), in 1x (inc J17), 2x, 4x+ (J13 - J15 ) , 4x- ( J16 , J18 ).

The course length will be 750m.

The Original Ball Cup Events

There are 4 events which are only for schools ( or schools within clubs ) with less than 40 members. These are the original “Ball Cup Regatta” conditions.

The actual Ball Cup Trophies will be awarded for these events.

The events are:

1st Boys 4+ 2nd Boys 4+

1st Girls 4+ 2nd Girls 4+

The events are open to any rowers J15 and above and are not age-conditioned. The competitors must be in full time secondary education.

Order of Racing
This is the expect order of the finals in each division. The regatta reserves the right to modify the order, depending on the entries.

The division times will depend on the entries.

Please inform Phillip Clements ( phil@marinex.co.uk  or  01453 732033 ) of any boat sharing.
